Advocating for Nature

DelNature takes a nonpartisan, science-based approach to advocacy. Guided by environmental research and community input, we work with policymakers at every level of government to protect natural resources and strengthen environmental protection.

Just as critical to our advocacy work is informing people about key issues through workshops and events and building their skills to be community advocates. From classroom students to community leaders, every voice plays a role in shaping Delaware’s environmental future.

Our Advocacy Priorities

Each year, DelNature works with a committee of advisors to establish priorities for the upcoming year. In recent years, priorities have focused on the following.

Funding for Open Space Protection

DelNature advocacy was critical for establishing the State of Delaware’s Open Space program which is its primary means for preserving open and natural lands in Delaware. Each year we advocate for at least $10 million of state funding for the Open Space program to ensure that this important work continues.

Protection of Critical Natural Areas

DelNature was also instrumental in creating the State of Delaware’s Natural Areas program as a means of recognizing and protecting places where critical natural ecosystems like forests and wetland thrive in our state. We advocate for the protection of Natural Areas and key features within them, like freshwater wetlands – which cover about 15 percent of the state and are particularly vulnerable because many lack any federal protection.

Clean Water for Delaware

Clean Water is essential for every part of life in Delaware. We advocate in Delaware for stronger water quality standards, sustainable funding, and responsible stormwater management to protect rivers, wetlands and drinking water sources. We also work through coalitions such as the Coalition for the Delaware River Watershed and Choose Clean Water Coalition in the Chesapeake region to strengthen funding and protections for clean water across state boundaries.

Climate Action

We advocate for practical, forward-looking solutions to address climate change and promote long-term resilience. DelNature supports responsible use of renewable sources of energy, including but not limited to offshore wind, and the protection of natural systems like forests, wetlands, and grasslands, that store carbon and reduce flooding while also ensuring cleaner air, safer water, and healthier ecosystems.

Environmental Justice

We believe everyone deserves access to a clean, safe, and healthy environment. DelNature supports legislation that addresses pollution in overburdened communities and advocates for investments in environmental equity, including through environmental education and planning.
